Gene Expression

The whole family come to a halt when they come to a point where the head doesnt have the mindset to take a decision, but the decision is left to a child who just stepped into his ninth year in life.

A doctor step out into the Outpatient lobby and call out for a patient. A boy stands up and walks towards him with a smile greeting, but weak due to the previous course of chemotherapies he had undergone for the past 6 months. He was diagnosed with osteo sarcoma (Bone cancer) in his upper tibia. A gene silent till then acts as a hurricane in his happy life.

He catches a glimpse of his parents face and sense the pressure in the air. His breath rate increases and his throat dried. He walks into the room and sits on the chair. His medical reports spread all over the table and a latest X-ray on the board. He waits for Dr. Uncle to face him from the deep study on his reports. A middle aged guy with a french beard trying to crack a code from the boys reports. The boy patiently waits, happens to notice interesting study model of bones made of plaster of paris.

Suddenly the doctor grabs his attention with a question. Silence spread over the room.

The next things people could hear is a loud crying voice, a voice deep from the broken heart of a boy. His parents rush to the room to find his disturbed, crying and confused. He hugs his mom and with watery eyes asks her “What shall I tell Dr. Uncle?”. Holding the pain within her she replies “its your decision”. Her years of dream being ruined, like a mud hut washed away by the waves on a beach.
The boy with all pain and will power manages to answer Dr. Uncle that he wants his life instead of a leg. He had to decide on whether he should forget running for the rest of his life and lead his life on crutches or count his life on the calendar.

To this moment a decision taken at the age of nine by him still withstand as wise. A decision feared by his family. Since then he is been able to face any barriers in his life with courage and will power. By god’s blessings and gifts he still lives happily with his family. But being a degree holder in biology doesn’t open the door to lead him onto the cause for this tragedy in his life. An expression of a gene on life.
